If you think church is for people who believe they are good, we have a surprise for you! We don’t think we are especially good just because we call ourselves Christians! In fact we believe that we have all done wrong and have failed to live up to God’s standard, but the good news is that Jesus took the penalty we deserve by dying on the cross in our place.
This means that, as we say sorry, turn from our old ways, believe and put Jesus first in our lives, we can be rescued from this punishment and set free from any wrong we have done (a).
All this can be found in the Bible, which we believe is the only true written record of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit (b). Why not check it out for yourself?
It’s not just Langstone Church that believes this. We and all the other Christian churches in Portsmouth are joined with countless millions around the world as the family of God, united in the faith we share (c).
Before Jesus went back to heaven, he gave us the Holy Spirit to be a comfort to us. The Holy Spirit also gives us supernatural power to help us hear from him and do his work. Scary? Not at all – just a great help for our everyday lives (d).
What about Jesus’ birth? Was he really born to Mary, a virgin? Yes! We believe the Holy Spirit conceived him, just as it says in the Bible. This is significant because, although he lived and experienced all that we do (temptation, joy, pain etc.), he did no wrong. How? This is because He is the Son of God and He demonstrated this by the miracles He performed. The ultimate miracle was that, after he died for us, he rose from the dead – not a ghost but an actual bodily resurrection. He is now at God the Father’s side and will return in power and glory, awesome! He will also judge our lives and faith. There’s a warning here. None of us can pass this test ourselves – we need to receive the gift of forgiveness that comes from accepting Jesus’ death for us (e).
If all this isn’t enough to blow your mind, we believe that there is just one God manifested as three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (The Trinity) and that he is all-powerful and eternal. He has always existed and is infinite in time and power (f).

(a) We believe that all human beings have done wrong (sinned) and come short of the Glory of God and that, through the death and risen power of Jesus Christ, all who are sorry and turn from their wrong ways (repent), believe in and receive Him, are saved from the penalty and power of sin.
(b) We believe the Bible to be the only true word of God.
(c) We believe in the spiritual unity and fellowship of all believers in the Lord Jesus.
(d) We believe in the continuing work of the Holy Spirit, His gifts (wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, discernment, tongues and interpretation) and graces (Love comfort and help to live).
(e) We believe Jesus to be the Son of God, who, conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born to Mary, a virgin, and lived a perfect life (without sin). We believe in His miracles, death, bodily resurrection and ascension to the right hand of God the Father and that He will return in Power, Glory and Judgement.
(f) We believe there is one God, who exists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
